I first saw Knedlin on Instagram and knew I had to visit this place. The first reason was my sincere and strong fondness for dumplings, and the second was the fact that their products looked fantastic in photos. I hadn’t been to Prague recently, but after a longer break, an opportunity arose and I made it!
I had to plan a visit to this place! The desire to try and a cool location made it easy!
Knedlin – location and opening hours
Bistro Knedlin is located in the very heart of Czech Prague. Although the district is called New Town, it’s about a 10-minute walk from the Old Town Square, and the distance is less than 1 kilometer. The exact address is Národní 115/24, 110 00 Nové Město, Prague. If you’re not heading to this area on foot, there is a metro station of line B (yellow) nearby called Národní třída. Also close by is one of the iconic buildings of the Czech capital – the National Theatre (Národní divadlo).
Knedlin is open seven days a week, but the opening hours vary. From Monday to Thursday, it’s open from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, on Fridays from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
About the Knedli
Knedlin is a bistro that breathes new life into the well-known dumplings everyone is familiar with. Indeed, while traveling through the Czech Republic, one is more likely to encounter them in their classic form (bread, potato, or Carlsbad dumplings), the version with filling inside is also popular. The owners of Bistro Knedlin started with the idea that the dish of stuffed dumplings needed to be adapted to the urban style and way of life. The dumplings served at the venue are available almost immediately – there’s no need to waste time, which everyone in the city has too little of. They believe that where there are a hundred people, there are a hundred tastes, so the choice of dumpling flavors is also considerable. Over 20 types of dumplings are served daily!
Bistro Knedlin occupies two levels. If you can’t find a spot on the ground floor, I recommend checking out the top, where there are plenty of seats available – in total, the venue has seventy. The interior is very pleasant, dominated by bright colors, wood, and flowers. It’s nicely and comfortably furnished, with a nod to tradition. Among other things, the walls feature inscriptions praising dumplings and their “wonderful” properties.
You can eat the dumplings on site, take them away in charming packaging, or order them for home delivery – Knedlin makes sure that everyone can choose the most convenient form for themselves.
What’s on the Menu?
Now that you know about dumplings, let’s start from the end. At Bistro Knedlin, you can enjoy beer, lemonade, iced tea, and hot drinks (coffee and tea in various forms). However, the most important part of the offer is the dumplings listed on the board above the order counter.
They are divided into sweet (on the left) and savory (on the right), and each item, besides the Czech name, also has an English translation. They vary in price depending on the filling, but most cost 69 CZK each (about 12 PLN).
During our visit, the sweet versions available were dumplings with blueberries, chocolate, pistachios, caramel and hazelnuts, coconut, forest fruits, apple with egg cream, plum, mango, strawberry, raspberry with white chocolate, and cherry. The savory versions were represented by dumplings with a meatball, beef burrito, cheese, souvlaki, ratatouille, with bear’s garlic and Balkan cheese, duck with cabbage and smoked pork, with cabbage, and with Thai shrimp stuffing. The process of making dumplings is ongoing, and the positions on the board change throughout the day.
Our Choice and Impressions!
We were tempted to try half of the available flavors and despite the fact that we couldn’t move and eat anything else until the evening, we have no regrets! We chose both sweet and savory versions, and I can’t decide which I liked more!
Bistro Knedlin serves each dumpling on a separate elegant plate. The takeout packaging is also very nice. All the flavors were very interesting. There were some we would eat more of, but also some that didn’t quite match our taste; however, in summary – it was a really tasty meal. Among the sweets, I really liked the mango and pistachio. As for the savory ones, I became a fan of bear’s garlic with Balkan cheese, Thai with shrimp, and beef burrito!
Dumplings at Bistro Knedlin are a cool way to dine, as small portions allow sharing and trying different flavors! I guarantee that after 2-3, you’ll be full, but there’s a good chance that the desire to try another option will win over and you’ll reach for another!
Is It Worth Visiting Knedlin?
Was it worth it to visit Bistro Knedlin? Definitely yes! Czech cuisine is fantastic for me, and combining the traditional form, which I mainly knew from the blueberry dumpling eaten in the Giant Mountains’ shelters, with world cuisines is a bullseye.
In line with the owners’ idea about human taste, there is a considerable choice of types, and you will surely find a dumpling that suits your taste. Do you feel like something with your coffee? Sweet versions are recommended! Time for lunch, breakfast, or dinner? Savory versions of dumplings are also waiting!
Butterflies
Right next to the Knedlin establishment, there is the beautiful and historic Maj Department Store, which also attracts the attention of tourists. On its beautiful facade, you can admire an installation created by the well-known Czech sculptor David Cerny. You have surely encountered his sculpture at the Franz Kafka Museum, or the “children” climbing the Petrin tower. This time, two huge butterflies have perched on the department store, their bodies shaped like the Spitfire fighter plane. They change colors and move in a way that resembles real butterflies. There is no doubt that this installation by David Cerny adds color to this already beautiful building and makes it attract even more tourists. It is dedicated to the pilots who died during World War II.
