Night in the mine

Visiting, tasting, getting to know new cultures are important travel elements, but the accommodation itself can also be the interesting part. Today I invite you to come to Wieliczka and spend the night in the mine.

As you’ve probably noticed my travels, I’ve never been a great fan of all-inclusive trips. Obligatory and the only route to explore the hotel-pool-beach is not my style. I am trying to get new experiences with every trip. A few years ago I spent the night in the open-air museum of the village. This time we went underground.

Wieliczka

Wieliczka is located just behind Krakow, and there are less than two hours from Kielce. The classic route, the road you are mostly using is impressive, but it is for “normal” tourists. There is also a mining route (You can read about it here). The Wieliczka mine itself is on the UNESCO list, its corridors are over 300 km long.

Sleeping

About the fact that at the Salt Mine in Wieliczka you can stay the night I learned quite fresh, but let’s start from the beginning. We left for the night with Daniłowicz shaft. We were using mining lifts. There are 5 people each, You can feel the climate of the mine. The place where you will sleep is called Stajnia Gór Wschodnich (Stables of Eastern Mountains). In this place there was a stable for horses working in the mine. It is located 135 meters underground and has room for 28 people. These are not rooms, but boxes separated by a half-walls.

The night in the salt mine has health advantages. The air contains no allergens and is very clean and ionized. One thing with You can notice is total silence. Bathrooms and showers are available. If You do not want to sleep all night You can also make some exercises, read some books or relax. . There is also a conference room and an exercise room. After waking up, I took part in an underground badminton session – an interesting feeling.

Cold?

It is not so warm underground, temperatures are about 15 degrees. I had a sleeping bag, but we also have bedding. I think you could deal with it. When it is cold outside it is easer to use to temperature underground.

Accommodation costs abou 30 EURO and is from Friday to Saturday. After a great night You can eat underground breakfast, go sightseeing or go top and sightseeing park or surroundings.

Is the night in the mine interesting? Definitely yes! It is hard to imagine that there are over 130 meters of rock and salt above us. Despite the fact that it can be little to scary it is also interesting. I recommend you!
