About the Winery
Linos Winery, nestled in the mountain village of Omodos, boasts a history dating back to 1825. For generations, the Herodotou family has been producing wine with dedication and passion, passing down their knowledge from grandfather to grandson. Since 1986, the winery has operated under the name Linos, combining tradition with a modern approach to winemaking.
The grapes come from the winery’s own vineyards, located on the limestone slopes of Mount Afamis – an area with ideal conditions for cultivation. Around 200,000 bottles of high-quality wine are produced here each year. In 1999, Linos was honored with an award for the best wines by the Cypriot Ministries of Agriculture and Tourism.
At the winery, you’ll find several tables where you can sit and enjoy tastings of local wines, while the owner is always happy to share stories about the products. In addition to wine, other types of local spirits are also available for tasting – but more on that in a moment.
There is also an on-site shop where you can purchase wine, other alcoholic beverages, and local products such as honey and various regional delicacies.

Wines
Linos Winery offers a wide selection of wines, blending tradition with a contemporary touch. The range includes both unique creations and classic varieties such as:
- Shiraz – a full-bodied red wine with a deep color and aromas of blackberries, spices, and earthy notes.
- Cabernet Sauvignon – an intense wine with aromas of blackcurrant, cherry, vanilla, and spices, featuring firm tannins and good aging potential.
- Rosé Cabernet – a fresh, aromatic rosé with notes of red fruits and citrus, perfect as an aperitif or paired with light dishes.
- Xynisteri – a light white wine made from the local Xynisteri grape, known for its freshness and subtle fruity aromas.
A particularly interesting choice was the sweet Muscat – with its pleasant floral and citrus-tinged aroma and a touch of sweetness, it makes for an appealing dessert wine!

Commandaria
Commandaria is one of the oldest wines in the world, produced in Cyprus since ancient times. It is made from sun-dried Xynisteri and Mavro grapes, traditionally fermented in clay amphorae. The wine is known for its sweet flavor with notes of dried fruits and spices. Commandaria was highly valued by kings and Crusaders, and its production is strictly regulated to this day.
Linos Winery is one of the places where you can taste Commandaria. I had the chance to try it both at the winery and in several restaurants across Cyprus. It’s a sweet wine, but one that releases a rich bouquet of aromas and complex flavors. In my opinion, it can be compared to wines like Tokaj Szamorodni. It’s not the kind of wine you’d drink a whole bottle of with dinner, but it’s perfect for enjoying with dessert!
Blue Wine
In 2020, Linos introduced the first blue wine in Cyprus – Mediterranean Blu, made from white Xynisteri grapes and natural pigments extracted from red grape skins (anthocyanins).
The result is a refreshing wine with a vibrant aroma and a smooth finish. It offers a fresh, fruity taste with notes of berries, lychee, and citrus – ideal for pairing with light dishes and best served chilled.
Mediterranean Blu won a Gold Award for design and a Silver Award for debut of the year at the CYPRUS ESTIA AWARDS 2022.

Breathtaking Views
Linos Winery is located in the Troodos Mountains, and if you’re lucky with the weather – which is rarely a problem in sunny Cyprus – you’ll be treated to stunning panoramic views, including the island’s highest peaks.
I’ve long believed that wine tastes completely different when enjoyed at the winery itself, and in the case of Linos, this theory holds true 100%! Sitting on a bench beneath a pomegranate tree, gazing out at the landscape, you can truly immerse yourself in the tasting experience of these delicious wines.

Not Just Wine
Linos Winery also offers a range of other alcoholic products. In addition to wine, be sure to try two other specialties – pistachio liqueur and Zivania.
Zivania is a traditional Cypriot spirit distilled from grape pomace, known for its strength and distinctive flavor. At Linos Winery, it is made using time-honored methods, giving visitors the chance to taste this unique drink that is an integral part of Cypriot culture.
The pistachio liqueur is made from Zivania, pistachios, and cream. It’s sweet, smooth, and reportedly especially popular among women for its delicate and dessert-like taste.

Is Linos Winery Worth Visiting?
Visiting Linos Winery is not only a chance to taste exceptional wines, but also an opportunity to immerse yourself in Cypriot culture and winemaking tradition. Its picturesque setting, rich selection of wines, and warm hospitality make it a place well worth including in your travel plans around Cyprus.
