Time for breakfast is doing well and even in Kielce is slowly growing. In larger cities, the number of places offering this most important meal of the day is large, and the meals offered by them can surprise you. During my visit to Cracow, I visited Handelek – a place offering traditional, local breakfasts.
It is not in Kazimierz or the Market Square. It is located very close to Galeria Krakowska, but even closer to the Stary Kleparz market. I will write you about this second place, because I liked it a lot, and the availability and quality of products were very high. Let’s return to Handelek. It is located at St. Filip street 16/2. You can park in the nearby gallery, but there are also a lot of parking spaces near the market. If you take advantage of the bazaar offer, the first half hour is for free. Opening hours are not typical:
- Monday: 6:30 – 13:00
- Tuesday: 6:30 – 13:00
- Wednesday: 6:30 – 13:00; 17:00 – 21:30
- Thursday: 6:30 – 13:00; 17:00 – 21:30
- Friday: 6:30 – 13:00; 17:00 – 21:30
- Saturday: 8:00 – 13:00
- Sunday: 8:00 – 13:00
The interior is stylish and modern, there is also a garden. The restaurant offers modern breakfast experience. Sounds good, but how about realisation? Very good!
Before the taste of food, I have two words about the idea of this place. The first thing to applaud for is the use of local suppliers. Cracow’s bread, pike trout is just the tip of the iceberg of local ingredients. The second thing is the way of preparing breakfast, which refers to the traditions of Cracow.
Although the name may surprise many people and seem like a new fashion, not related to the catering industry, breakfast traders’ traditions date back to 1848. However, they did not survive the Second World War.
But let’s go back to eating. The menu includes sandwiches, scrambled eggs, fried egg, herring tartare, challah and several other delicacies. You can also opt for a breakfast set. I decided to:
- sandwich with liver paste, apple and onion
- sandwich with paternal smoked trout with Anchois and parsley
- sandwich with paste from the chicken if I remember correctly :)
- quince lemonade
Sandwiches cost 5.50 PLN, but you can combine them into sets and add coffee or tea. The sandwiches are very tasty, and according to the recommendation of serving sandwiches with liver paste is sensational.
I have already mentioned a few pluses of the premises. In addition to local ingredients and recipes, an interesting location, attractive prices can be added one more thing – free drinking water.
Handelek is a place worth visiting and trying. It does not matter if it will happen in the gallery, on Stary Kleparz or just in the area, take a look because it’s tasty! :)
