I have heard about this place more than once in my life. Arkadia and the English garden there was also a topic during my studies. While exploring the Łódź Province, I decided to visit this place as well!
Due to my busy schedule, I visited Arkadia in the morning. It was after the tourist season so I was walking in the garden almost alone.
Arkadia – how to get there?
Arkadia is a town in the Łódzkie voivodeship, near Łowicz. It is 6 kilometres away from the city centre. At the entrance to the garden, on the north side, there is a free car park where you can leave your car.
The Skierniewka River flows through the park, where a pond was created, so in the months of high mosquito activity it is worth being aware of this.
Availability and opening hours
Ticket prices are as follows:
- 16 PLN – normal
- 10 PLN – reduced
If you are also planning a visit to the palace in Nieborów, it is worth considering purchasing a combined ticket. It is a few PLN cheaper.
The garden is open during the season (April to September) every day from 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m., and in low season from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.
History of the park
The park in Arkadia is an English-style romantic garden. This style was in contrast to the ideal, regular baroque gardens and offered free compositions enriched with references to antiquity or the Middle Ages. It was founded by the wife of Michał Hieronim Radziwiłł – Helena Przeździecka. Szymon Bogumił Zug is considered to be the main designer of the garden, but over the years, other people have also contributed to it. The origins of the garden date back to 1778.
What’s in the garden?
Arkadia is not a garden in which we can find tomatoes or carrots – it is a large park with many thoughtful details. There are a number of buildings and small architecture objects on its territory.
Among them, it is worth paying attention to:
- Aqueduct
- Temple of Diana
- Stone Arch
- Gothic House
- Sybil’s Grotto
- House of Murgrabi
- The Tabernacle of the High Priest
- Wall with Hermes
What’s in the neighborhood?
The area is rich in interesting places! The first of them is the previously mentioned Palace in Nieborów. It is worth visiting Łowicz itself and visiting the triangular market square or the beautiful cathedral. In the area, pay attention to places related to folklore, among them I definitely recommend the Folk Museum in Sromów and the Open-Air Museum in Maurzyce.
Worth to visit?
Arkadia is an interesting but unusual place. We rarely have the opportunity to visit the parks / gardens themselves. We most often visit such places when visiting a castle or palace. Arkadia is a place worth visiting when visiting the area. For me, it is not among the top attractions in this region, but it is definitely worth getting to know them!
