Langos is probably one of the most characteristic streetfood from Hungary. Chimney cakes trying to chase him, but I think that they have no chance of winning. The only opportunity to eat langos is in Hungary or food truck events. From today you can prepare them yourself at home!
You can meet langos at every step in this country. It is definitely not a diet meal because in its most popular version it is served with garlic oil, cream and yellow cheese. You can meet langosh also in other versions – with potatoes or yoghurt, but this version is a classic version.
The word Langos comes from láng which in Hungarian means flame. That was how they were originally prepared. Currently, they are deep fried, but about that in a moment.
To do langos you need:
- 0.5 kg of flour
- 40 g of fresh yeast
- 400 ml of milk
- half a teaspoon of sugar
- half a teaspoon of salt
- about 500 ml of vegetable oil
On top:
- 50 ml of oil
- 5 cloves of garlic
- cream (I used 18%)
- grated yellow cheese
We start with adding yeast and sugar to gently warm milk. Mix thoroughly and leave for several minutes. Do it in a large container because the volume of the mixture will definitely increase. In the meantime, mix the flour and salt in the bowl. We add leaven and mix. I used a robot, but you can make a dough by hand.
After making up, leave it for about 40 minutes. At this time, the dough will increase its size about 2 times. After this time, remove it from the bowl and roll. Cut into equal pieces. With this portion of cake you will easily make 10-12 langos with a diameter of about 15 centimetres. We roll and put into oil. One cake is fried in about a minute. If you notice the golden edges, turn it over.
When it is ready, take it out onto the paper to drain off the fat. You can eat Langos alone or with toppings. The most popular set is garlic, cream and cheese. The preparation of this version is simple – garlic is pressed through the press and we add oil. Set aside so that the oil will have the taste of garlic. Then, with a mixture, we grease the langos, put on the cream and sprinkle with yellow cheese.
Langos are not dietetic dishes, but they are tasty! While I am in Hungary, I reach for it often. From today they will also appear at my home, but not too often – I don’t want to look like langos! ;)
